6 Bits of Spearfishing Gear You Don’t Have (but should)

In the exhilarating realm of spearfishing, where the synergy of skill and gear is paramount, there lies an uncharted domain of innovation waiting to be explored. Beyond the well-trodden paths of masks, fins, and spearguns, lie six often overlooked spearfishing gear items that beckon the intrepid diver to embrace an experimental mindset.

From superb spearo seafood cookbooks that upgrade kitchen prowess to robust tourniquets that save lives, these unsung heroes of the underwater pursuit possess the potential to transform your spearing game. Embarking on a journey fueled by curiosity and a thirst for optimal performance, the diver willing to delve into the realm of untested accessories might just uncover the key to unlocking their ultimate spearfishing adventure.

    1. Octacle Open Cell Wetsuit Lube

As spearos know, open cell wetsuits require lubrication to climb into and getting the right lube that suits your skin, looks after the suit and the ocean is our goal. Octacle (a New Zealand mob) have create a smooth lube from seaweed! No chemical nasties, detergents, plastics or any other bad joojoo, just comfy, easy, natural lubrication made by divers for divers. Easy to mix, easy to ship, check out the Octacle Lube here.

    2. Sharkband Tourniquet

Major hemorrhage. Two words that no spearo wants to hear but if you are prepared can be the difference between life and death. Whether it’s a cut injury, boat prop or shark attack, a major bleed can happen and a tourniquet can save your mates life. Check this one out from Sharkband, they belong on your weightbelt or at least in the boat! This is how you use them

    3. 99 Spearo Recipes

On a lighter note! Many spearos are great hunters but thrash the same 3 seafood meals. My friend, let’s upgrade our cooking game with 158 actionable seafood meals crowdsourced from our spearfishing community. There are also 8 full on guides to caring for your catch, smoking fish and even dry aging. Get yourself a copy and a mate who needs to up their seafood game!

    4. Adreno Fish Filleting Knife Set

To go with that upgraded cooking game, you need some dedicated knives stashed away that your housemate won’t use to cut up the vegies. Treat yourself to a filleting knife set that you can stash away after each filleting/boat cleaning session and keep them sharp.

    5. Wetsuit/Gear Wash - 1L

Rank piss smell, mold, bacteria…need I say more. Clean your delicate neoprene with a wetsuit wash purpose made to eliminate odour, remove salt and chlorine and maintain your suit for year to come. Everyone wants to save money but the product you might be using, might just be destroying your wetsuit. Buy bulk with these 1L bottles and look after your suit!

    6. Invisi-Skin 3mm Wetsuit

I bought the open-cell story for a long time but now in the warmer water off Brisbane, 7-8 months of the year, I rock this suit. No lube required! It’s warm (not as warm as open cell but warm enough) and it’s super tough. With my rough, sausage fingers and clumsiness, i've damaged many open cell suits but this one keeps going. It’s also budget friendly and the cut suits me a bigger bloke. While this suit might not suit you, I reckon its an awesome suit for 21-26C water and I’d suggest the 5mm is good for 16-21C water as well. Don’t just write off the jersey/spandex lined suits!

In the unending quest to perfect your spearfishing game, it's time to break free from convention and embrace the often overlooked, yet utterly game-changing gear items that lie beyond the surface.

As you dive deeper into the realm of innovation, you'll discover treasures like the Octacle Open Cell Wetsuit Lube, crafted from the sea itself to ensure effortless donning and respect for both your skin and the ocean.

Prepare for the unexpected with the Sharkband Tourniquet – a guardian angel that holds the power to turn dire circumstances into stories of survival.

Elevate your culinary prowess with the 99 Spearo Recipes, a collection of gastronomic delights sourced from the very depths you explore.

Complement your newfound cooking finesse with the Adreno Fish Filleting Knife Set, a worthy companion for transforming your catches into culinary masterpieces.

And don't neglect your trusty gear; cleanse away the salty residue and foul odors with the Wetsuit/Gear Wash, a guardian of your equipment's longevity.

Lastly, defy preconceived notions with the Invisi-Skin 3mm Wetsuit, proving that warm, durable, and budget-friendly can indeed coexist.

Remember, it's not just about the dive itself – it's the potential within these often hidden treasures that can unlock the next level of your spearfishing journey. So, gear up, dive in, and let your experimental spirit guide you towards uncharted waters and unparalleled victories.
