Adreno New Arrival
Shark Deterrent Technology
Personal Shark Deterrence for Divers, Spearfishers, Surfers & Swimmers
Sharks are part of the deal when you spend real time in the ocean — diving, spearfishing, surfing, paddling or swimming. The newest personal shark deterrent to reach Australian shores, the Freedom8, gives ocean users another layer of confidence in the water, built on electronic deterrent technology with over two decades of independent testing behind it.
Freedom8 is manufactured by Sentinel Ocean Systems and is now in stock at Adreno, ready to add a proven layer of personal risk reduction to your next session on the water.
Freedom8 is a wearable electronic shark deterrent designed for swimmers, snorkellers, surfers, divers, spearfishers and marine professionals. Once switched on, it builds an electrical field in the surrounding water. If a shark comes in close, the field creates a sensation strong enough to encourage it to turn away before making contact.
The technology behind it has been developed and refined over more than two decades, independently evaluated by shark researchers and published across multiple peer-reviewed journals covering species including Great White, Bull and Tiger sharks.
Sharks detect faint electrical signals through a sensory organ called the Ampullae of Lorenzini. Freedom8 puts that sensitivity to work — a trailing antenna emits an electrical pulse field, and when a shark moves into range, the discomfort encourages it to change direction rather than continue its approach.
It's non-lethal by design and won't attract or injure sharks or other marine life, giving ocean users an added layer of protection without disturbing the wider ecosystem.
Good to know: Freedom8 is a risk-reduction device, not a guarantee. It's designed to help reduce the likelihood of close shark approaches and works best alongside good ocean awareness, local advice and existing shark safety measures.
Freedom8 is built for divers, spearos, surfers and swimmers who need gear that's easy to use and ready for real conditions:
Freedom8 suits anyone wanting an extra personal safety measure in the water — divers, spearfishers, surfers, paddlers, swimmers and fishers. It can also be configured for boat and kayak use, adding a deterrent field around fish being towed or handled boatside.
It's a risk-reduction tool, not a guarantee, and works best alongside good ocean awareness and local safety advice.
Freedom8 recently featured on Channel 7's Sunrise, covering its launch into the Australian market and the science behind the technology: watch the Sunrise segment.
